The making of my second portefolio 

I have been working and improving my abilities all year, and tried to focus on fixing errors on my past assignments so I would not have so much to change when the time came to start putting this together. 
I spent almost a week looking trough different portefolios other students from Noroff have put on youtube and I got a few interesting ideas from that. 


Character Design assignments

I worked from week to week to polish ad fix problems with my character. I took the feedback I got onto consideration when continuing the next week. I am very pleased with the results.
The thing I regret the most about the whole prosess is that I didn't take my time to draw more and develop more on the character before I started the sculpting. I'm bad at drawing and I thought (at the time) that I would only waste my time trying to draw more. But now when I am finished with the assignments I wish I used more time drawing and developing the character from the beginning.
The thing I'm most proud about is that I managed to make the chracter in Zbrush and it looked 95% like I wanted it to. That is something I have never managed to do before.

Animation assignments

Acting 

I worked from the feedback I got and worked towards better and more sincere poses and animation. 

Cycle

I tried to get a more realistic walcycle for someone who is proud about themself as I tried to reflect in the animation. 

Body mechanics

Worked so hard on a believable fall that I messed up the ending. I tried to polish it, but time ran out..



Portefolio 

I started opening and checking over all my assignments and looking trough the different feedback I've gotten from my teacher to figure out what assignments to use and how I would aproach it to make the final renders. 
I started going trough all my drawings for my Character Design, thats when I noticed that I had to few drawings, So I figured in my video I would show the basics of how I wanted my character to be ( the text) and on the right I was showing drawings from dirrefent ideas I had. Most of them I showed my classmates and asked for their oppinions and that helped alot towards the character I ended up making. 
Then I started making different render passes for my character. Distortion Grid, Wireframe, Textured etc. When I was happy with that I started going over and checked that all my naming and stuff was the way it was supposed to be. (Good workflow really helped me here) I made a 3 point studio light setup and made my render commands that I executed before leaving the school. 

When I got home that evening I checked the pictures and they were ok so it was time to start putting the animation video together. 
That was very straight forward. I rendered my walkcycle and used playblast for my two other animations, and put them together in Premiere Pro. 

I made a call on both my videos to put all the text in the intro. (Logo, Class/year and Name) to save space so I could spend the whole time on the stuff I wanted to show.

Week 35 - Character Animation Project

3 Weeks Animation Project

I made a Timebudget before starting 


I started of planning what I wanted to make.
  
                  Brief 1) The Character is trying to get an object that is out of reach. Give the character a clear motivation for why they want it and how they go about getting it. The character may or may not end up achieving their goal. Show a build up or change of emotion throughout the shot. (Eg, )Have a clear beginning and a conclusion.

So I managed to figure out what I should make. So I started planning it, Did some research of other projects to see how better people than me have made their projects. And got a few ideas about what I should make. 
Come Friday and I shot my reference. I took a lot of takes but I took the best parts and put them together to a reference. 
Thursday next week was I supposed to start blocking but I wasn't finished with my reference at that point so the blocking started Friday. 

And it's hard to admit but I didn't take time to get the feedback on Monday but rather used the day to continue with the animation. When I was done with the blocking I started animating and filling in the blanks. And it was a tight fit but I managed to finish in time to render and deliver. 

Have been a few hard weeks. My biggest regret was that I did not use my chances to get feedback. I think that would have helped alot with the animation. And I feel like watching the animation over and over again that I start getting a bit blind to my mistakes and what could have been better. 

I hope you do enjoy the idea even though I know that there is room for much improvements here. But I should have managed my time better.

P01 - Semester Assignment

Semester Assignment Portefolio 01

The assignment is clear. Take the various models and animations I created trough this year, and use the feedback I have gotten to improve them and then showcase them in a 720p movie that is no longer than 2 (Two) minutes. 

My first regret when I read the assignment was that I have almost no notes of the feedback I've gotten. But fortunately I remembered some of it, and I have progressed enough to see stuff that is not right. So I took care of the obvious mistakes and made a few test renders so I could put down a time-budget and figure out how much time I would have on each project. I knew that no matter how much I spend on one project there is always room for improvements and I can not waste to much time on one project when I got so much to do. 

After making the test renders I put it together in Premiere so I could have a template. I then proceeded to ask my classmates what they thought, and asked them all to take a look and tell me what could be improved. I made them aware that this was not my final product, but my way to figure out what to do. And I got very nice feedback from a few of them. I then proceeded to ask my teacher what he thought. And he gave me a few hints on improving the movie, and then we talked about the individual projects and he gave me a few pointers. This time I took notes so I could make myself a nice time-budget.

Fish Concept 

First thing I did was changing the positioning of the fish. I did not think of compositing when I made the final render for the assignment we had at all. I figure I was to busy with the headache called zBrush. I found a better position and rolled with that. Then I made some new render layers and made a turntable. I think turntables is a nice way to show of my model in a easy way to see the whole fish. So I rendered out Checker, Edges and the final fish on a turntable and then proceeded to add a final render of the fish in his environment to show the end result. 


Computer Concept

I was not satisfied with my computer as it was. The colors was weird. The reflections didn't work the way I wanted them to. And the computer looked way to square. So I changed the model to make it more round and not limit myself to the box concept. Because the way it did look I could call the project "Box Concept" and that is something I did not want. I started working on the colors and optimized the normal map. 

Environment Concept

On this project I knew I would need the most time. It had some noise in it so the first thing I did was figure out what those noises where and tried to fix them. When I was satisfied with that I started changing the colors to make it more appealing. Since I had to finalize my day render and night render I figured I would use my VFX scene. Since I already used the environment to make the dynamics and particles scene. I figured it would help me with the whole read thread through the whole project thing. And I had made so many changes since the weeks we made that project that I didn't want to go back and waste so many hours doing the same things twice. There were no major changes tough. I added the jewelry box I made the first three weeks and put it on the couch just so I could have it there. Other than that I changes many colors and rendered the whole scene in a day scene and a night scene. Then I took it into Nuke to make a few more changes, added some depth and made some more post production color corrections etc.

VFX 3 - Compositing

This week was all compositing. We have already learned about render layers, and that helped alot during this assignment.
Made a time-table how I thought this week would play out.

The finished product does not look anything like this at all. I am very satisfied with my product. managed to change very much in nuke to make it look much better.

VFX2 - Render elements and layers

Getting tired of visual effects...

This week I'm going to finalize my simulations from last week and RENDER the scene out in pases.
Need to learn some things to make this happen. Next week I will composite them all together and adjust them to get the best visual result.

I started this week with research. Trying to make my flames better than what they were. And I managed to make them pretty nice! at least I am satisfied. I'm not searching for the CG prefect. I'm a newbie who are trying my best to pass this class. And so far I'm doing an OK job I think!

The render passes we needed for this week was Ambient Occlusion, Beauty pass, Multi-Matte Pass and z-Depht pass. So research, research and more research. Got it to work and ended really satisfied with the final result!
I do not have any final images or anything to show you, because of the file type I am using to make this. It makes it harder to give you anything to see. But I got one printscreen from my post production in NUKE (A new program we are using now) so you can see how it will be and have a look at the new program.

VFX1 - Particles & Dynamics

And now everything is changed! 

Because over the next three weeks we are going to work on a previous project. We could choose LR1, LR2 or LR3. (See previous blog posts) I chose my environment LR2!

Much research

Had to do much research and watch quite a few videos before I was ready to do this week. But somehow I managed to make it. I failed so much on the fire I made but I figured since we were going to use three weeks on this stuff I would leave it like that until I've learned more about it. 

Not much to say about this week. Was mostly just tweaking settings getting everything the way I wanted so I can continue more next week. So the shortest blog post ever incoming.

LR4 - Light and render the fish

Lighting and rendering the fish


Busy week! Because I know that the render will take time. And there is so many things we're going to do this week that I do not know anything about. But let's take a look and see how it goes. 

Process

I started with researching underwater scenes and figuring out what made it look like a underwater scene. Figured out how lights would work. Had a lot of lectures learning about volumetric lights and fog and fake caustics etc. Once I was sure I figured out all the technical stuff I started working with my scene and made the seabed and everything. I made a "Godray Light" It is basically a spot light that I'm not allowing all the light to come out from. But to see the godrays the way I wanted I had much work ahead. Because now I started making the fog. It was so hard to make and I was so freaking proud when I finally managed to do it. And because I managed to do it, and since I used so much time and tried so many things, I learned so much! I was able to help multiple of my classmates with theirs also because of that. And it was so much fun learning others. It was much stress and much BS but in the end I'm really satisfied with everything I learned.

After this week I've learned much and I understand much more. I'm very happy with my final render. and now you have to tell me what you think.
